Top ten tech trends for 2019
Set in a dystopian 2019, the epic sci fi film Bladerunner correctly predicted overwhelmingly large digital billboards, flying cars, and computers that we would interact with through speech, though it didn’t necessarily see them fitting in our pockets.

Venice Biennale 2017 – Top 10
This is our “Top 10 pix” from one of the biggest and longest running international art exhibitions that only happens every other year – the Venice Biennale 2017.

Last Chance to see the Venice Biennale 2017
Three more weeks until the end of the 57th Venice Biennale! If you haven’t been, you better hurry or you would have to wait for a couple of years until the next Biennale.

NY’s resolution: work less, achieve more
It sounds too good to be true, but the old routine of slogging away at a screen for 8+ hours without a break as you ride caffeine spiked waves of exhaustion is making room for new and more intelligent working practices.

Top 10 Technology Trends for 2017
Here’s a look at some of the top trending technologies for 2017 with a few unashamed sci-fi references to go with them.

Brighton’s Virtual Reality scene – part 2
It is a fascinating time for VR developers and artists seeking new mediums, of which there is no shortage in Brighton. At the VR lab launch, which was part of the Brighton Digital Festival, I recognised musicians, mixed media artists, programmers, gamers, and representatives of companies exploring commercial and training applications. That is the beauty of VR, it is an open field, where corporates are turning to indies and cutting edge companies to provide them with the next great interactive experience who in turn are trying to discover just how far the boundries stretch.

Brighton’s Virtual Reality scene – part 1
Virtual Reality has a growth curve pointing straight towards future consumer adoption. The most interesting developments are still happening on the periphery, and the VR scene is having its moment in Brighton.

Pokemon Go and the battle for reality
Augmented reality has been silently waiting in the wings while Virtual Reality has been busy tap dancing on the global media stage. AR has appeared to be a technological advancement loaded with potential that hadn’t quite found its niche and was too busy being overshadowed by its big brother VR, until the release of Pokémon Go.

Would multilingual people become an endangered species in the UK after Brexit?
With Brexit politics having entered homes and minds, having divided families and neighbourhoods, the benefits of multilingualism deserve some attention. If Brexit happens, then it might become harder for multilingual speakers to enter the UK whether they are clever or not.

What would Brexit mean for tech startups in the UK?
If you listen to the mainstream media in Germany and the UK, you would think that Brexit is a done deal and definitely going ahead. Only a few question the results and the need for getting such an important decision past parliament first, where a majority is expected to block a potential move towards Brexit.

Social Media Superheroes
What if social media were superheroes? Who would be the Silversurfer, Rogue or Spiderman of social media?

10 key points for a digital marketing audit outline
‘What should a digital marketing audit include?’ is a commonly asked question when a client is in the process of developing a new communications strategy or website that needs to be fit for purpose for the digital age.

Fusing Emerging Technology and Art
When Pegasus PR approached me to do a presentation for their Inspiring Healthy Futures event, I thought that it would be great a opportunity to talk about 3D body scanning and 360 time freeze photography and how we have been fusing this emerging technology with art to grab people’s attention. The only tricky bit was the actual theme of the event ‘inspiring healthy futures’, because what we had been creating was more to do with fun and novel event experiences rather than inspiring people to live healthy. Luckily, there are a number of applications for this technology within the health and fitness industry as well as other sectors.
VUE and RealD turn Cosplayers into 3D avatars at London Comic Con
Every May and October, a vast majority of the 100K visitors to London Comic Con dress up in their favourite comic, game or sci-fi film character. Some Cosplayers do this for living and have a selection of stunning costumes that they slip in and out of. It’s a great festival atmosphere where people who might otherwise be wearing a black suit and tie every weekday, decide to put on their Stormtrooper body armour or turn into Poison Ivy or a giant Foxy for the three day event.

Emerging Technology Trends in 2016
During your crystal ball gazing exercises you may or may not have come across the Gartner’s Hype Cycle of Emerging Technologies. Keeping an eye on Gartner’s yearly report can be useful and interesting as it shows what stage of development emerging technologies are at – from conception to maturity and mass adoption. It has been used since 1995 to show the common pattern of “overenthusiasm, disillusionment and eventual realism” that comes with each invention and new technologies. It is often used by companies as a guide for when new technologies should be adopted for maximum impact and value.

How to engage the unengaged and delight the disillusioned
How do we create innovative experiences and digital media campaigns that engage the unengaged by fusing emerging technology and art, 3D body scanning, 3D printing, or projection mapping? You name it and we might have an idea or two that are waiting for a nudge from you to be turned into reality.

Digital PR and the world of blue sky thinking
If you had a limited budget for marketing and PR (public relations), would you hire someone with a background in marketing, PR, social media, SEO (search engine optimisation), or digital communications? The lines between all of these disciplines are becoming more and more blurred with PR professionals being expected to be experts in social media, and digital communications managers to know everything there is to know in the world of digital…

Could Virtual Reality threaten land-based casinos?
With new VR sets coming out every other month and lots of money being poured into this industry, guest blogger Dean Lovett ponders over how VR might affect the gambling industry. Reports from Forbes have indicated that in less than 10 years, the industry in Las Vegas has seen incredible highs as well as devastating lows partly due to the recession. Gaming in Las Vegas peaked in 2007 with revenues of $6.83 billion. However, land-based casinos have shown a decline in growth, even in the promising region of East Asia, as more and more people are turning towards online gambling.

Digital Marketing Trends in 2015
With the trend of major social networks such as Facebook giving prominence to paid for updates on their platform and others following suit, does it mean that social media is becoming less social for small businesses? Is it pay for play or get lost type of time? Does it mean that we will see more updates in social media from organisations that can afford to pay for having their voices heard?

Social Media Survival Kit
In this prezi, you will find an overview of the main social media platforms for freelancers and small businesses:

Is 3D printing the new manufacturing revolution or evolution for the digital age?
With all the media hype around 3D printing over the past couple of years there is no way of escaping the wonders of this old yet new and emerging technology. It’s not new because it’s been around for more than 30 years, but it has become more affordable and more accessible in recent years thanks the Open Source movement, the crowd-funding revolution, and lots of clever geeks.

3D printers in offices: a must have or a nice to have?
The hype and excitement around 3D printing hasn’t slowed down in the past few years and it’s not showing signs of easing off anytime soon. Some experts say that every household will have a desktop 3D printer in the next ten years. But before they end up in everyone’s home, we will probably see these machines in 3D printing shops, cafes, and offices.

The race is on to get 3D printers into schools
Ultimaker’s open source and MakerBot’s closed source 3D printers are making their way into schools.

Another chance to get a mini-you made of bio-plastic
As a follow up of the popular Break the Mould 3D scanning and printing arts installation, 3Dify is taking part in the New England House Open Studios at the Fusebox, Level 4, on Thursday 12th, Friday 13th, and Saturday 14th December 12-8pm.

Break the Mould wrap up
Now that we have had a chance to take a deep breath after the Brighton Digital Festival, we have put together a few thoughts, facts and figures about our 3D scanning and printing art installation.

3D printing mini sculptures of yourself – a new trend spreading like wildfire?
With the help of Italian installation artist Emilia Telese and some technological wizardry from 3Dify, Developing Dreams are dragging the concept of the photo booth kicking and screaming into the age of 3D printing and low cost 3D scanning.

Developing Dreams to Break the Mould
We are getting very excited about Break the Mould, our interactive 3D printing installation. We have been working with Brighton based Italian artist Emilia Telese and tech wizards 3Dify on this.

Brighton Maker Faire announces stellar line-up
Developing Dreams’ interactive 3D printing installation, a giant knitting robot, laser printed trains, and a social media powered photobooth are just some of the highlights at the Brighton Mini Maker Faire at the Corn Exchange on 7 September.

Brighton’s digital industry boom
When The Drum, a news site specialising in modern marketing and media, approached us to comment on the state of Brighton’s digital economy, we were delighted to share our opinion with reporter Angela Haggerty.

Final call to makers for Brighton Maker Faire
Developing Dreams is very excited about its involvement in the Brighton Mini Maker Faire 7-8 September 2013. We will help promote the biggest celebration of arts, crafts, science and technology in the South East which is in its third year running. We will also help organise a mini conference, running alongside the main event, with inspiring talks by local and world-renowned makers.

The Art of Freelancing
There are approximately 25,500 self-employed people in Brighton and Hove. This represents 13% of 16-64 year olds which is much higher than the national average of 9.6%. Why is that? Is it the lure of the sea that tempts people into freelancing and self-employment?

The Business and Pleasure Summit – 3D Printing Revolution or Evolution?
Kati Byrne from Developing Dreams was presenting at the Business and Pleasure Summit in Brighton on the current state of 3D printing and a glimpse into the future.

3D printing babies – a matter of conception
The difference between these two articles on 3D printing from in utero scans caught my eye recently. Same process, same technology, but while one seems slightly freaky and outlandish, the other seems humanistic and innovative. Don’t think you’ll have any trouble spotting which is which…

3D printing on the moon and beyond
To take one pound of equipment into outer space costs around $10,000, according to Autodesk’s director of strategic research. It doesn’t take an accountant to figure out why governments are already ploughing swathes of cash into researching the application of 3D printing in a zero gravity environment.

3D Print Pod
Developing Dreams have joined up with an incredibly skilled team to put forward an expression of interest for a funding proposal to the Technology Strategy Board. It contains a lot of great ideas and potential directions on making the most of 3D print technology.

3D printing possibilities are endless (literally)
If you think that 3D printing is just about making tiny trinkets from expensive source material then this one is for you.

WebGL: Another weapon in the 3D printing revolution
Browser-based 3D is taking a giant leap forward thanks to a technology called WebGL. It isn’t fully supported by Internet Explorer or Apple ios yet (though jailbreakers on ios have ways and there is reportedly an Apple hack).

3D Printing a Brave New World
Imagine if after an earthquake you could airdrop machines that build houses in under a day. Imagine if you had cheap and accessible medical kits that could produce bespoke medicine on demand. Imagine if you could fabricate shoes, clothes, solar cells, lamps, toilets, pipes, water pumps, and just about anything else on site and at the touch of a button.
