The brief

VisitBrighton had a clear directive from the start: no generic stands. They wanted something that represented Brighton's progressive creative character and functioned as a practical meeting space within a 5m × 3.5m footprint — touring internationally from London Olympia to Seville.

The challenge

Standing out at a major trade show requires something conceptually different, not just better-looking. The added constraint was that the stand had to tour internationally, assemble without specialist tools, and pack down efficiently — all while maintaining the visual integrity of the concept.

Our approach

Three initial concepts led to one clear winner: a three-dimensional miniature rendering of Brighton itself — its landmarks, conference venues, and hotels — built entirely from laser-cut plywood. We undertook proper audience research first, creating personas and moodboards before a single material was chosen.

Three initial concepts led to one clear winner: a three-dimensional miniature rendering of Brighton itself, built entirely from laser-cut plywood.

The engineering solution was as clever as the concept: the packing crates became the structural base of the stand itself, assembling with only nuts and bolts. The West Pier became a working table and stools, the Palace Pier a high-level one-to-one meetings bar. Collaborators included designer Rich Plastow, Exhibit Printing for laser cutting, and 3Dify for construction.

Where AI fits next

The most effective technology disappears into the experience — visitors didn't think about laser-cutting tolerances, they saw Brighton and felt something. If we were building this today, a conversational AI assistant embedded in the stand would handle repetitive venue queries — capacity, availability, pricing — freeing the team for higher-value conversations. A live data layer could surface real-time Brighton venue availability, turning a static display into an active booking conversation. The physical model remains the emotional hook; AI handles the operational substance underneath.
